Becca Stadtlander’s picture book debut, On the Wing

On the Wing is a stunning new picture book from Candlewick Press, written by David Elliott and lavishly illustrated by Becca Stadtlander. This book is hot off the presses and is already being met with glowing reviews. We wanted to take the opportunity to catch up with Becca and ask her some questions about her experience with this project and her hopes for the future. To see more of Becca’s artwork you can view her Bright portfolio and for more on Becca’s journey as an illustrator you can follow her blog.

This was your first picture book, What was that experience like for you? It was a lot of fun. But it was also sort of scary. I wanted everything to be so perfect and now I look back on it and see a lot of things I would do differently.  Ha!  I guess that means I’m growing and I love that feeling.  It’s so satisfying to see it in print. Now that it’s over I’d like to see it be the first of many.

What media did you use? Gouache, a little bit of black ink and white gel pen.

How was working with Candlewick? It was wonderful.  I couldn’t have asked for a better experience!  Everyone was friendly, welcoming and just a delight to work with.  I was able to meet the designers, and art directors in person, which was great. (I live nearby their offices and was invited for a visit to present my final artwork.)  I hope I get to work with them again, and again and again…

What other projects would you like to get under your belt? I would love to work on as many book projects as possible, but my hope is to write my own someday.

What was your favourite piece to illustrate? The first piece I worked on, which was the Japanese Cranes.  It was before all the stress set in, haha, so I see it differently than all the others.

Did you do any special research? Oh yes!  I looked at hundreds of bird pictures to make sure I had everything as accurate as it could be.

What new projects are you currently illustrating? I’m working on two very special illustrated versions of Pride and Prejudice and The Secret Garden for Quarto in the UK. Both of these stories are on my favorites list, so I couldn’t be more thrilled! And, I just signed up my next picture book with Chronicle Books, a dream come true.

Congratulations, Becca on your debut book and new signings!
