Amanda and I had a great time at the SCBWI Annual Winchester Event, hosted on Saturday night in the fantastic Guildhall. Chattering around a room filled with book lovers from all perspectives, it was apparent that the support of SCBWI is an important contributer to the confidence and positivity of their member authors and illustrators – invaluable traits in the competitive world of book publishing!

Industry professionals and published authors were clearly set apart to give the unpublished authors and illustrators in the room the best chance of pitching their ideas. Correspondingly the wine flowed and new ideas mingled. On top of the chat, a Mass Book Launch celebrated the 2012 publications of members’ books.

As an agent, it was great to meet all of the exciting new talent we hope to see gracing the publishing lists of tomorrow. Equally heartening was the presence of the great global publishers and their fantastic teams, each taking the time to listen and give unique advice.

Overall I congratulate SCBWI for a fantastically well-structured event packed with aspirational speakers (Children’s Laureate Malorie Blackman) and, most of all, fun. My personal highlight was meeting Catherine Rayner, who won the Greenaway Medal in 2009, and her 2012 book, Iris and Isaac, won the UKLA Children’s Book Award. The event was filled with inspiring authors and illustrators and next year I would love to see more illustrators represented!
