Blood, sweat, tears (of joy!) & some incredible artwork… Behind the scenes of the Bright calendar 2016
There’s been a flurry of action in the Bright Office this week as our Christmas elves have been busily stuffing envelopes with beautiful Bright Calendars for 2016.
At Bright, we make three calendars for the year: one featuring our publishing illustrators for both UK and the USA, and one by our licensing artists. This year David Litchfield, author and illustrator of the evocative picture book, ‘The Bear and the Piano’ [Frances Lincoln] and the atmospheric, ethereal artwork of Gerald Kelley adorn the covers of the UK and US calendars, whilst Clair Bremner, who paints vibrant, abstract landscapes is on the cover of our licensing calendar.
I have been chatting to our designer, Jamie Cross, about how we reach the finished product.
With a great number of artists and so much talent now at Bright, how do you decide on the artwork for each month?
Our Agents decide on who they would like to feature in the calendar for the year ahead. We make sure that as many artists as possible are featured, particularly those who have recently joined us, as well as our more established illustrators.
Jamie Starts by organising the dates and days as well as adding the observances and big events throughout the year. He then collates all the work chosen by our agents, which covers the different areas of publishing styles – around 36 images are selected, and then from there, he works with Vicki, Bright’s MD – narrowing it down to the final twelve. Then the artwork is put to each specific month – colours and imagery are really key at this point.
After several changes and various final touches – fairly close to deadline (hence the tears – which then became tears of joy later) the calendars were complete! In Jamie’s own words, “To see the finished product arrive put the biggest smile on my face and it felt like a great achievement!”
Licensing Agent, Hannah Curtis has over 10 years experience in Art Licensing and has worked with some of the largest brands worldwide. Her catalogue of artists is extensive and ever growing, with some great new names.
Below are just a few of the beautiful images in our licensing calendar for the year ahead.

So Jamie, do you have a favourite of all the three calendars?
I couldn’t possibly say!! I loved creating all of them equally. Some of my favourite illustrators are in the UK publishing calendar – for example, Nicola O’Byrne, Fred Blunt and Ben Mantle, but you’ll have to wait to see the calendar – no spoilers!!
Oh okay – maybe just one…
Thanks to Jamie and the design team at Bright. You can order your Bright Calendar by giving us a call on 0207 326 9140 – but hurry – they run out fast! LM
